Hartford, WI Real Estate & Homes for Sale

Hartford is the next town west of our Slinger office, and we help buyers and sellers here every year. This page covers what the listing portals leave out: how Hartford works as a place to live, what homes are listed for right now, and what to check before you buy or sell.

Why people move to Hartford

  • A real downtown: Hartford is a city of about 16,000 people (2020 census) with a walkable Main Street of shops and restaurants along the Rubicon River.
  • Commute: Highways 60 and 83 cross in the city, and Highway 60 runs east to Interstate 41 at Slinger. Downtown Milwaukee is roughly 38 miles to the southeast.
  • Range of housing: century-old homes near downtown, established subdivisions, condos, and new construction on the edges of the city, with acreage in the surrounding towns.
  • Outdoors close by: the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest sits on the east side of town.

What homes cost in Hartford

As of early October 2026, about 50 single-family homes with a Hartford address are for sale, listed from the mid $220,000s to about $1.1 million. The average list price is around $470,000 for roughly 2,100 square feet.

About 20 condos are also on the market, listed from about $230,000 to $460,000, with an average near $305,000.

These are asking prices for active listings, not sold prices, and they change daily. For a number on your own home, get a free home valuation from a local agent.

Neighborhoods and housing types

  • Near downtown: older homes, many built in the early 1900s, usually at the lower end of the price range and within walking distance of Main Street.
  • Established subdivisions: areas such as Western Hills, Settlement Ridge and Rettler Farm Estates, with homes built from the late 1990s through the 2010s.
  • New construction: Harvest Creek, Coppertrails and Borlen Farms all have recently built homes on the market this fall.
  • Condos: a steady supply of two- and three-bedroom condos, a common choice for first-time buyers and downsizers.

A Hartford mailing address covers more than the city itself. Homes in the Town of Hartford and neighboring towns can carry a Hartford address, with different taxes, utilities and school districts, so confirm the municipality on any listing you are serious about.

Schools

Most of the city is served by the Hartford Joint 1 School District for the elementary and middle grades (Lincoln Elementary, Rossman Elementary and Central Middle School) and by Hartford Union High School for grades 9 through 12.

Some Hartford-address homes fall in other districts, including the School District of Slinger. Boundaries do not follow mailing addresses, so check the district for a specific property before you write an offer.

Things to do

  • Pike Lake: swimming, hiking, camping and cross-country skiing in the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.
  • Wisconsin Automotive Museum: a downtown museum that tells the story of the Kissel cars once built in Hartford.
  • Schauer Arts Center: touring shows, community theater and arts classes in a converted canning factory next to the museum.
  • Golf: Washington County Golf Course and Hartford Golf Club are in town, and Erin Hills is a short drive south.
  • Holy Hill: the basilica and its views over the Kettle Moraine are a few miles to the southeast.
  • Nearby lakes: Big Cedar Lake is a short drive east. See our Big Cedar Lake homes page.
